Necessity of sustainable maritime logistics system
With the fluidity of the world economy and the expansion of the global division of labor, the international cargo volume has sharply increased in recent years in response to the shift of method of production from local production and local consumption to concentrated on production and procurement at lowest cost country. In marine logistics, which handles most of the volume of international freights, it is necessary to build a supply chain that meets the demands of industry and satisfies both agility and certainty.
Breaking away from the existing port management system
However, the number of workers engaged in ports is decreasing year by year, and drastic improvement of port operations is required from the aspect of workforce and physical setup. In the most recent example, under the influence of the spread of COVID-19 infection worldwide, some major ports have been forced to stop operations due to the shortfall of skilled workers. In addition, due to the nature of handling heavy objects such as containers, the workload / risk of port workers are maintained at a high level, securing highly skilled port workers is also an extremely difficult task. To avoid the potential risks caused by relying too much on "manpower",introducing new technologies provided by both hardware and software to improve the working environment of port workers are needed. While securing excellent workers, it is also necessary to shift to a robust and sustainable port management system that does not rely on the personal and empirical skills of such workers.

Pursuit Well-Being for the Port Workers
In order to complement the uncertainty of "manpower" mentioned above, it is necessary to improve workplace environment to increase the motivation of port workers to prevent them from leaving. In other words, it is important to continue innovation to make the port an attractive workplace that is guaranteed to be safe and secure. At the same time, it is also necessary to build a system that will not stagnate logistics operations even if human resources are deficient, and to establish a system that allows port workers to focus on higher-level and advanced work.
Building a sustainable port operating system
To improve current port operation method, by full use of IoT technology and DX transformation, it is important to systematize "Personal Know-how" which is currently owned by selected skilled workers. By utilizing such a systematized "Personal Know-how" it will be sublimated into a more sophisticated and efficient logistics system that could not be realized by the process that had been manually handled. Such actions will be required to realize a sustainable "Smart port".
Harmonious with peripheral communities and environment
In addition, to achieve a sustainable development of the port, it is required to maintain a good and win-win relationship with surrounding local communities which provide the port with transport infrastructure i.e. road and/or railways connected to the port, and indispensable workers who will work at port. The improvements of the working environment of the port workers and innovations of the port operations advocated above should eventually bring benefits to the surrounding communities and contribute to expansion of cooperative relationships with them.
The purpose of Co-Creation
We have contributed to the innovations that the port logistics industry has achieved so far with hardware (supply of hydraulic equipment / systems to transport equipment / vehicles). In the future, we would like to collaborate with a partner groups that have core capabilities in fields of software, achieve a sustainable "smart-port" that integrates hardware and software, and take on the challenge of solving social issues.
The "smart port" we aim for is to provide port workers with a safe and secure environment to free them from dangerous work, and to accelerate / automation personnel know-how in a digital form. At the same time, port workers could concentrate on more advanced tasks such as improvement and creation of new operational processes to create a new appearance for the port.
In addition, by working to reduce the environmental load by shifting energy to hydrogen and electricity, we will improve the safe and secure environment of the port, increase the well-being of port workers, and contribute to the economic development and conservation of the environment of the surrounding area and communities.
The ports targeted for this Co-creation will be set in a wide range of areas, from huge ports in developed countries that have already been streamlined, to emerging ports in developing countries where maritime logistics will increase in the future.
